About the movie
“Prithviraj” is a historical epic war action drama film based on a true story. Chandraprakash Dwivedi directed the movie and Aditya Chopra produced it under the banner of Yash Raj Films.
Chandraprakash Dwivedi wrote the script and Manush Nandan looked after the cinematography. Aarif Sheikh edited the movie.
The movie is based on the king Prithviraj Raso, a Braj Bhasha epic poem about the life of Prithviraj Chauhan, a king from the dynasty of Chahamana.
The cast of the movie
Prithviraj movie casts Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Sonu Sood and Manushi Chhillar in the lead roles. Miss World 2017 pageant, Manushi Chillar enters the Indian cinema industry with this movie. It also features Sakshi Tanwar, Manav Vij, Ashutosh Rana and Lalit Tiwari as the supporting characters.
Akshay Kumar plays the role of Prithviraj Chauhan and Manushi Chhillar plays the role of Sanyogita in the movie. The role of Chand Bardai is being played by Sonu Sood, whereas Sanjay Dutt plays the role of Kaka Kanha. Manav Vij comes on the screen as Muhammad Ghori and Ashutosh Rana as Jayachandra. Release of the movie
Yash Raj Films on 9 September 2019 released an official motion poster of the film by revealing its release in cinemas on 13 November 2020, on the occasion of Diwali. The principal photography began in Jaipur in November 2019 but later suspended it in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic in India. The movie was indefinitely postponed. The filmmakers announced the release date as 21 January 2022 in 2D and IMAX but later postponed this too due to the spread of the Omicron variant. After a lot of postponements, the makers finally announced the release date. The shooting resumed in October 2020 and it now releases on 3 June 2022.
Director’s dream
Chandraprakash Dwivedi completed the script for Prithviraj in the year 2010, and his first preference for the role of Prithviraj was Sunny Deol, with Aishwarya Rai playing the role of Sanyogita. However, due to the date issues of Sunny and Aishwarya and no interest from the production houses, Dwivedi left the project and shelved it. But his interest in making Prithviraj never died and after struggling for almost eight long years to find a producer to come on board for him, Yash Raj Films and Aditya Chopra offered to produce the film in the year 2018, thus reviving the film.
Dwivedi said in an interview,“‘Prithviraj’ is my dream project. It’s a script that I have nurtured for a long, long time because of the extensive research work that was needed before I even attempted to make a film on this mighty and legendary king. To be precise, Prithviraj‘s final research took about six months for me to be fully satisfied that every single fact was checked multiple times. I read many books on his life to ensure that we are doing justice to Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan in our film. Today, I’m deeply satisfied as a writer and filmmaker that I took this time before I could realise my dream. There is no Samrat like ‘Prithviraj’ in our history and I hope our film is a fitting tribute to his valour and magnanimous way of life.”
Akshay Kumar’s role
Akshay Kumar confirmed his role as Prithviraj in March 2019 on his social media handle. On Akshay’s 52nd birthday, i.e., 9 September 2019, the makers made the film’s official announcement with a motion poster released by Yash Raj Films’ social media handles. Manav Vij and Sanjay Dutt feature in the movie in villainous roles. The actor shared on his Instagram: “Truly happy to share the news of my first historical film on my birthday. I’m humbled to have the opportunity to play a hero I look up to for his valour and values – Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan – in one of my biggest films #Prithviraj produced by @yrf. Akshay while sharing the Prithviraj teaser on Twitter wrote, “A heroic story about pride and valour. Proud to play Samrat #Prithviraj Chauhan. Celebrate #Prithviraj with #YRF50 only at a big screen near you on 21st January’22”.
Talking about the movie, Akshay said that the teaser of Prithviraj captures the essence of the whole film. It carries the essence of the life of Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan. He further says that the legendary warrior carried no fear in his heart. As Akshay read about Samrat, he got awed by Samrat’s way of living and sticking to his values in his every breath.
Trailer of the movie
The trailer of the movie still remains unreleased. Today, Akshay Kumar informed his fans about the release of the trailer on the 9th of May, 2022 by posting a video on Instagram. In the video, Akshay Kumar shows off his sword skills. He cuts the visual text” Trailer out on 9th May” and then the text “Prithviraj” appears visually. The fans wait for the release of this trailer as well as the movie.
Teaser of the movie
The makers of this historical drama Prithviraj revealed the official teaser of the movie in November 2021. The film looks like a treat for the fans of Akshay Kumar from the first look of the teaser, as he steps into the character of the bravest Samrat of India Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan. The teaser gives a sneak peek of the epic saga featuring the fierce Akshay as the valiant emperor. Chauhan pulls his wife Sanyogita, played by Manushi while riding the horse in the teaser. The teaser begins with the introduction of the bravery of Emperor Prithviraj Chauhan. The voice in the background says, “The one behind whom 100 army and 100 feudatories are ready to behead themselves, is the emperor Prithviraj Chauhan. Everyone get ready to salute him, Hindustan Ka Sher Aa Raha Hai”. Akshay says, “I have lived for religion, I will die for religion”. This clearly depicts the greatness of the fearless Samrat.
The storyline of the movie
The film tells us the story of fights between Mohammad Ghori and Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan.
Mohammad Ghori, who imprisoned the emperor by deceit plays an important role in the story. Prithviraj defeated Mohammad 16 times in his lifetime, but the greatness of Prithviraj allowed him to forgive Ghori every time. But for the 17th time, he defeated the emperor with the help of Raja Jaichand.
Chand Bardai wrote the book, Prithviraj Raso when Mohammad imprisoned Chauhan. He took Chauhan to Ghazni, and Chand accompanied him there.
Prithviraj Chauhan was blinded and imprisoned by Ghori there. In a demonstration of the archery skill of the ruler in the court of Ghori, Prithviraj struck the Ghurid ruler himself following the poetry recited by Chand. That revolutionary step created a legend now recited through the years.
Budget of the movie
Made on a budget of around Rs 2.5-3 crore, this movie became one of the highest budget movies of Akshay Kumar’s career. The magnificent setups, heavy dresses and cinematography clearly justify the high budget of this movie.
As Prithviraj is a period movie, it will feature places of historical importance. According to the reports, the makers shot the whole film on 35 different sets. The places include the states of Rajasthan and Maharashtra. Also, they used many places in and around the film city to create huge and magnificent sets for the movie. Apart from this, the shoot also took place at Udaipur, Jaipur and Jaisalmer. Overall, the movie features historical places and setups based on the storyline and plot.
Ahead of the monsoon season of 2020, the makers took down the sets created in Rajasthan because their maintenance costs during the COVID-19 lockdown came too high. With no filming expected to take place before the monsoon 2020, the makers destroyed the two sets erected in Dahisar, one of a palace and another of an arena constructed for an action sequence. Instead, they set up an indoor set for replacing the sets and resuming the film. The filming was finally completed in February 2021.
To make the film Prithviraj a visual masterpiece, the makers engaged thousands of workers to construct the colossal sets of the movie.
Fight sequences
The movie includes incredible fight and action sequences. This portrays the wealth of the kings of the Rajput Empire and the prosperity of their kingdoms.
The soundtrack of the movie
The musical trio, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy worked together for the music in the film. The background score composed by Sanchit-Anchit also looks perfect according to the theme of the film. The makers also used the VFX meticulously.
