The superstar Akshay Kumar marks his presence in Indian cinema with his 30 years of acting. The actor worked in some of the blockbuster films, Indian cinema has ever seen. Beginning with the job from a waiter to martial arts teacher to a model to a renowned actor, Akshay has definitely seen everything in his life. After passing through the harshest days of his life, he shined in the industry without any godfather. Real Name

Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia, didn’t you recognise him? The real name of the legendary Akshay Kumar. He changed his name because in his debut movie “Aaj”, the lead actor Kumar Gaurav played the role of a character named ‘Akshay’. Akshay used to only observe Gaurav’s acting but one day, he went to the court and changed his name. He also named his production house “Hari Om Productions” after his father, who worked in the Indian army.

Taekwondo 

The actor received a Black Belt in Taekwondo. The actor liked martial arts since childhood and began learning the same when he studied in 8th grade. He even took lessons in the Martial Arts industry in Bangkok before joining the Indian film industry. He learnt Taekwondo in India and moved to Thailand to learn Muay Thai. Upon his return from Thailand, he started teaching martial arts in Mumbai by starting a class. One of his students asked the actor to model for a shoot and this paved a way for him to enter Bollywood.

Beginning of his career

Initially, Akshay worked as a waiter and chef in Bangkok. After returning from there, he entered Bollywood. Akshay also hosted a documentary named “Seven Deadly Arts with Akshay Kumar” for the National Geographic channel. For a long time, he worked at a restaurant in Bangkok, and also described that phase as one of the ‘toughest’ phases of his life. The actor often waited to receive a tip by the end of his service but customers often left him disappointed. Often, Thai girls used to give him a peck on the cheek. 

Routine 

When it comes to his daily life, Akshay Kumar is very disciplined in life as he wakes up at 5 AM. Around 6 AM, he begins his work. Akshay follows the simple rule of going early to bed and rising early. Even after a packed schedule, the actor manages to wake up before sunrise and sleeps by 9 PM every single day. He consumes his dinner before sunset and never consumes anything after 7 PM.

Entry into Bollywood 

The student who suggested the career of modeling, also helped him in bagging a modeling assignment in a small company. He used to earn Rs 5,000 for a few hours to pose in front of the camera. Later, he built his portfolio and started making the rounds at various film studios. Luckily, he met the producer Pramod Chakraborty in a studio where signed the hero for the film “Deedar”. Before making a debut in Bollywood as a lead actor in Saugandh (1991), Mahesh Bhatt casted him in a blink-and-miss role of a martial arts instructor in “Aaj”. After making his debut, he started receiving a lot of projects.

In Akshay Kumar’s Gym, he exercises without any equipment. Akshay strongly opposes picking body weights for fitness. Instead, he believes in swinging  and climbing trees instead of lifting body weights. The actor actively practices sports like shadow-boxing, kick-boxing, and basketball. He also practices yoga everyday. Akshay usually engages in an hour of swimming and practicing martial arts. He concludes his workout with an hour of meditation for his mental health. 

Generosity of the actor 

Akshay still remains generous at heart. All the profits earned from the Punjabi devotional song ‘Nirgun Raakh Liya’ contributed to the donations towards victims of the train bombings in Mumbai.

Rejection

The 1992 film “Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander”, auditioned him for a role but later faced rejection from the same. 

Honorary Doctorate of Law 

For Akshay’s contribution to Bollywood, in 2008, the University of Windsor conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Law on him.

When the actor featured on Anupam Kher’s talk show on TV, he shared his ‘Kuch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai Moment’. The actor shared “While working in Bangkok, I had three posters plastered in my room. One of Sylvester Stallone in Rocky, one of Jackie Chan and the other of Sridevi. And today by God’s grace I’ve worked with all three of them!”

First payment

Akshay Kumar missed a flight to Bengaluru, where he visited for a modeling assignment. Feeling demotivated, he visited the Nataraj Studio when Pramod Chakravorty spotted him and offered him three films. He received a cheque of Rs. 5000 for his first film, Rs. 50,000 for the second one, and the third cheque for Rs 1.5 Lakh.
