After a wait of two years, two lockdowns, and two cyclones, along with the director as well as the cast testing Covid positive; it has been quite the journey. While talking about her upcoming movie, Alia also says that this indeed was a gigantic life-changing decision. In her long heartfelt Instagram post, Alia Bhatt mentions that it wasn’t easy to complete the shooting, given the situation.
In her tweet she says…”We started shooting Gangubai on the 8th of December 2019 .. and we wrapped the film now 2 years later!This film and set has been through two lockdowns.. two cyclones.. director and actor getting covid during the making!!! the troubles the set has faced is another film all together!But through all that and more.. what I take away is the gigantic life changing experience!
Being directed by sir has been a dream all my life, but I don’t think anything would have prepared me for the journey I was on for these two years.. I walk out of this set a diff person today!
I love you sir! Thank you for being you .. there is truly NO ONE like you 🪄✨When a film ends a part of you ends with it! Today I’ve lost a part of me.. Gangu I love you! You will be missed♥️

Beginning of the project : Alia Bhatt in Gangubai Kathiawadi
Did you know that Alia Bhatt was never the first choice for the role, in and as Gangubai Kathiawadi? Priyanka Chopra was almost locked for the role, but she had to back out due to date issues; after which Rani Mukherjee was approached for the lead role. But she too declined the offer due to unstated reasons, and the role landed to Alia Bhatt. Furthermore, Alia Bhatt as Gangubai Kathiawadi will be quite an experience to watch as she is yet to do a role like this in her acting career. The official trailer is yet to release, but hopefully, the trailer launch will take place soon as the shooting is now over and under wraps. The release date is scheduled to be 30 July 2021, but whether an OTT release or a theatrical one; it is yet to be announced. Starring Alia Bhatt in the lead, and marking the debut of popular TV celebrity Shantanu Maheshwari in Bollywood; the shooting started in December 2019. And it took two years to complete the shooting due to various problems like; two nationwide lockdowns, two cyclones, and the cast as well as team members quarantining from time to time.
Although the film was almost complete, about 70% shooting was completed around March 2020. But the former problems led to a halt of the shooting and filming process.
Based on a True Story?
While some claim that it’s a fictitious storyline, whereas some call it based on a true story. Allegedly, the film is somewhat based on a true story, from the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai by S. Hussain Zaidi. The story revolves around a simple girl from Kathiawad who embraces the way destiny swings the situations in her favor; making her one of the most powerful women. Furthermore her story from being a simple innocent girl to a madame of the Red Light area of Kamathipura.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s take on Gangubai Kathiawadi
As we all know that Gangubai Kathiwadi is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming most awaited film. And moreover it will also have a Telugu release alongside its original Hindi release. But did you know? That as soon as the shooting for Gangubai Kathiwadi got over, allegedly Sanjay started prepping up for a yet another new project!
According to the reports, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is going all in with his upcoming series Heera Mandi on the same day as he completes shooting for his former project. Although he isn’t be directing the series, but Sanjay Leela Bhansali is the producer. The directors also says that it wasn’t easy to complete Gangubai Kathiwadi as with the new strain of COVID; the whole state was under lockdown before the nationwide lockdown this year.
Alia Bhatt Upcoming Big Projects :
Alia has built her name over the years, and not just as a star kid, but as a true talent as well. Along with Gangubai Kathiawadi, she is also shooting for RRR, a SS Rajamouli film. Now, with the name of SS Rajamouli you can guess that its going to be a big blockbuster.
RRR is a Telugu language film, which will release in multiple languages that include Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi and Kannada. The initial release was set in January 2021, but due to the global pandemic the release is now scheduled to be 13 October 2021.
