Happy Birthday Bhumi Pednekar : A Girl who’s living her dream
We all remember Bhumi Pednekar as the overweight bride from Dum Laga Ke Haisha. That movie marks her debut in the Bollywood Industry. And Bhumi has since then been doing films that many actresses would hesitate to go for. An actress who has been headstrong and broken so many stereotypes that revolve not only in the Bollywood Industry, but the wide audience as well. When talking about her health and debut movie, Bhumi has a lot to say. And she also talked about how the journey isn’t as easy as it seems to many. Let’s start from the very beginning, shall we?
Bhumi Always wanted to be an Actor?
Did you know? Bhumi Pednekar was the Casting Director and Assistant Director on the sets of Yash Raj Film for over 6 years under Shanoo Sharma. Her debut movie Dum Laga Ke Haisha did good commercially, and she successfully steals the show with her convincing acting. The way she immerses into the character Sandhya, an overweight wife whose husband is not willing to accept her because of how she looks. But the role no where tried to showcase empathy or sympathy; instead Sandhya’s portrayal is that of a strong and bold woman who won’t take up any kind of disrespect. An educated woman who knows what she wants and goes for it, although the movie was a rom-com, it did a pretty good job in relaying it’s message.
While talking about her journey so far, Bhumi says that she is actually living her dream. Although the roles she gets are more inclined towards breaking stereotypes, strong and brave ones. Almost every movie and project she has worked for, has highlighted her as a regular middle class woman as such; unlike the glam girls Bollywood is used to.
Bhumi is not made alone, but by a team
Confusing? Well, what we mean to say this is Bhumi believes that the actor she is now, the credits go to a lot of people and not just her alone. While sharing some interesting facts about her daily life, she says that she has more than 8 whatsapp groups. From stylists to designers and marketing team as well as the PR, there are many people who have built Bhumi as a brand. And she is thankful to them and more importantly she’s thankful to her parents; who believed in her and supported her when she confessed to them that she wanted to be an actor.
Has Bhumi reached her Goal, or is yet to do so?
While talking about her films and roles so far, Bhumi has done some ground-breaking films, And the characters she has played has never failed to impress the viewers. In Lust Stories, she shared that doesn’t limit herself or the characters she plays for some cliche or unsaid reasons. And as an actor she doesn’t feel that she won’t do intimate scenes with her co-actors when asked to. As directors demand to see the performance on a scale on 1-10 as 10. And doing intimate scenes is not a big deal as people often make it out to be. But yes, the audience of India is still quite orthodox. So she was glad that Lust stories was released on Netflix. As comparatively, the audience of Netflix is a bit matured and accepts the new and bold ways a film is nurtured.
Bhumi doesn’t want to limit herself if its done for the right taste and reasons. And as with time, roles written for women are changing. She also talked about several women centric films, which are helping in decreasing the gender disparity in the Industry.
What is Stardom for Bhumi? How has it changed?
Stardom has absolutely changed, says Bhumi. It has become more relatable and seems achievable. As earlier, it was more kind of considered as unachievable and unattainable. For every actor, stardom is differently defined by their own perceptions and view-points. For many it makes them feel special and happy, whilst there are actors and celebrities who don’t like to be in the limelight.
Bhumi in real life vs reel life
The characters Bhumi has mostly played are like that of a middle-class woman and not so glam. But in real life, Bhumi confessed that she loves the glam and dressing up, getting her hair and make-up done. This was quite unexpected, wasn’t it?
