Top 10 Bollywood Movie Couples that turned from Reel Partners to Real Partners!

Bollywood has weaved many real-life love stories together on the shooting sets. From showcasing romance in the films, it has paved a way for them in real life as well. Here are some top Bollywood movie couples that brought their on-screen romance to off-screen too.

Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan

Talking about the top Bollywood movie couples, there is no one better than this legendary couple, to begin with. The Bachchans have been together for nearly half a century, which surely inspires all the love birds in the country. The couple had a Bollywood style love story, wherein Jaya fell in love with Amitabh at first sight. After a few years of flirting and romance, the couple finally tied the knot on June 3, 1973. They were soon blessed with a daughter, Shweta Bachchan and a son, Abhishek Bachchan. Both of them worked together in many classic hit movies, for instance, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Ek Najar, Zanjeer, Mili, Sholay, Silsila, Bansi Birju and a few others.

While shooting for Ek Najar, Jaya’s heart was all over Mr Bachchan and they soon got introduced to each other on the sets of Guddi. The cast of Zanjeer promised to take a trip down to London if the movie succeeded well at the box office and it even did so. While planning for the trip, Mr Bachchan’s family asked the couple to marry each other for going together on a trip and therefore, they got married. Jaya never really doubted his husband even after hearing numerous rumours about his affairs with his co-stars. The level of trust and understanding between the two is something to fall for.

Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai

Inspired by his parents, Abhishek Bachchan was no less in terms of falling in love. He met Aishwarya Rai for the first time on the sets of her first Hindi movie “Aur Pyar Ho Gaya” with Bobby Deol. They went to dinner together but Aishwarya couldn’t figure out anything he was saying because of his thick accent. They did their first movie together “Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke” in 2000. The couple became close friends after they did another movie “Kuch Naa Kaho” together. Abhishek soon proposed to her on the balcony of a hotel room in New York and they got married on April 20, 2007.

Their wedding was no less than a fairytale wedding for the viewers, few even called this ‘Wedding of the decade’. The Miss World was dressed up as a South Indian bride in a saree of Rs 75 Lakh, which could obviously be one of the most expensive ones during that time. The couple went on a honeymoon to Europe. After 4 years, they became parents to Aaradhya Bachchan. Both of them along with Amitabh Bachchan shot an item song ‘Kajra Re’ from Bunty Aur Babli in 2005. The two have worked in many movies together, such as Guru, Raavan, Dhoom 2, Sarkar Raj, etc. They are true ‘couple goals’ due to their understanding and dedication towards each other for almost 15 years. Even today, the beauty of their love has not faded and is expected to grow even more beautiful.

Kajol and Ajay Devgn

Their story is a bit different from the other two we discussed. Kajol and Ajay met in 1995 while shooting for Hulchul. Kajol got a role in the movie after the lead actress Divya Bharti passed away. Initially, Kajol hated Ajay for his introversion as she was quite the opposite, full of joy and laughter. But as time grew, they became good friends and the story started. There were no such fancy proposals in their story, love just found its place between them. After four years of secret dating, they finally got into holy wedlock on the 24th of February, 1999. Ajay wished to keep the wedding so private that he didn’t even call the professional photographers.

The couple faced various criticisms about being an ‘odd/unlikely pair’ because of their contrasting natures but they fought against all the odds and are staying together since last 27 years. Therefore, it is rightly said, “Unlike poles attract each other.” Kajol even suffered a miscarriage when she was pregnant for the first time, but because of the support she received from Ajay, they became parents two years later in 2003. She gave birth to their lovely daughter Nysa. After seven years, they again relieved the same feeling when Yug, their son was born. They teach us that fancy proposals and love stories are not necessary for a happy marriage, love should always prevail over other things.

Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone

The super hot couple surely set social media on fire after announcing their relationship. Taking you back to the beginning of this love story, Ranveer saw Deepika at an award show in Macau in 2012 when he got a ‘huge crush’ on the actress. At that time too, Deepika felt that there was a connection between them. Their chemistry began with their first movie, “Goliyo ki Rasleela Ram-Leela”, wherein they showcased some hot intimate scenes. After the film got superhit, they were seen together again in two back to back hits, “Bajirao Mastani” and “Padmaavat”.

The couple got secretly engaged a few years later. The dreamy big fat wedding of Ranveer & Deepika was arranged in Italy on November 15th, 2018. They tied their nuptial knots according to Sindhi and Konkani traditions. They hosted lavish receptions in Mumbai and Bangalore. The couple welcomed their baby boy Randeep through surrogacy in 2020. Kapil Dev’s biopic “83” featured both together again in 2022. This couple has definitely set the benchmarks for the young love birds.

Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna

This Bollywood love story seems no less than a romantic film, where a film’s box office collection decided their fate. Akshay fell for Twinkle at first sight when he saw her for Filmfare’s photoshoot. The love story began on the sets of their first film together “International Khiladi”. The most interesting fact is that they are together because of a bet. Yes, you heard it right! Twinkle was very confident of her movie “Mela” in 2000 and told Akshay that if the movie did not go well, she’ll marry Akshay.

And yes, the movie flopped and the couple married on January 17th, 2001. There were rumours about Akshay’s wedding with Raveena Tandon because of their three-year relationship. Akshay and Twinkle featured in a few movies together, such as Tees Maar Khan and Zulmi. The happy couple has now become the parents of two children, Aarav (2002) and Nitara (2012). They still serve as an inspiration for many.

Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor

This lovely yet different story broke all the stereotypes regarding the age difference in society. Saif is 10 years older than Kareena, who fell for him while working on the film “Tashan”. Though this was not their first movie together, they have previously worked in Omkara and LOC Kargil together. Saif even got a tattoo of Kareena’s name on his hand. After four years, their big day happened with a small intimate wedding, just like the other star couples. Kareena never had a problem with Saif’s divorce from his first wife, Amrita Singh. They gave birth to two sons Taimur in 2016 and Jehangir in 2021. There is a lot to learn from their relationship, the saying “Age is just a number” has been appropriately proved by them. Despite being divorced, an individual can restart their love life and not get carried away with the past.

Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh

The story of one of the most celebrated old school couples will leave us in tears and smiles at the same time. The legendary actor Rishi Kapoor left the world and this couple in 2020. The couple stayed together for almost 40 years and would remain forever together in their fans’ hearts. Unlike other couples, their love was not, at first sight, the story began with their first meeting on the sets of “Zehreela Insaan” in 1974. Neetu hated Rishi because he used to prank her a lot during those days.

The couple started dating soon, with a promise to not marry each other but destiny planned something different for them. They married each other on 22nd January 1980 and soon became parents of Riddhima (1980) and Ranbir (1982). The couple featured in 12 movies together from Do Dooni Chaar to Love Aaj Kal to Besharam and more. Rishi battled cancer for almost two years and died while his last film was in progress. Holding on to each other through thick and thin is essential to have a beautiful life together.

Genelia D’Souza and Riteish Deshmukh

One of the sweetest couples of Bollywood had their first meeting just like the other couples. They met while shooting for their first film “Tujhe Meri Kasam” in 2002 when Genelia was just 16 and Riteish was 25. The dreamy proposal just before 10 days of her marriage will surely make us go ‘aww’. Riteish proposed to her on a yacht in Marine Drive displaying fireworks on the building they were facing. The couple tied the knots on 3rd February 2012, with Maharashtrian and Christian traditions. Their two sons, Riaan (2014) and Rahyl (2016) gave them the joy of parenthood. This power couple regularly makes funny reels and put them on their social media. Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya and Masti featured them together and Mister Mummy, starring them is in the shooting phase.

Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover

The hashtag ‘monkey love’ couple had gone against the orthodox society and fell deeply in love with each other. While working for the movie “Alone” in 2015, their hush-hush romance began. Karan proposed to her with a ring on the last day of the year when the sky was full of fireworks. Though it was difficult for the couple to get married because of their past marriages, the couple’s wedding took place on 30th April 2016. Aadat Diaries even featured them. A failed marriage is definitely not a sign that the individual involved has to be wrong.

Dharmendra and Hema Malini

Ending the article with a beautiful love story of this veteran couple, which is quite romantic and astonishing as well. Out of all Bollywood movie couples, their story is the most unique. The two met on the sets of “Tum Haseen Main Jawan” in 1970 when Dharmendra lost his heart to Hema, though he was already married to Prakash Kaur with two sons.

Initially, Hema and her parents were sceptical of his first marriage because Kaur disagreed to divorce Dharmendra but Hema accepted his proposal while working for their film “Sholay”. Dharmendra, was so deeply in love with her that he even converted to Islam because having two wives is allowed in that religion. They got the title of ‘Mr and Mrs’ on the 8th of December, 1980 and gave birth to Esha and Ahana in 1981 and 1985 respectively. The couple taught us that love can make us do crazy things for staying together.
