This happens because of the wider reach of Hindi as a language. And also because of the Bollywood celebrity status of the actors of the Hindi film industry. From Wanted to Rowdy Rathore, there are huge super hit blockbuster Hindi movies remade from the respective South Indian movies.

Ghajini (2008)

Ghajini is inspired from the Tamil film of the same name. For a lot of fans of international cinema, the Aamir Khan–starrer Ghajini is loosely inspired from the movie ‘Memento’. The Tamil film had Surya as the lead and went to become a hugely successful film. Bollywood remade this film and it met with huge success and praise from the fans and critics.

Singham (2011)

Rohit Shetty’s direction, Singham is a huge hit with audiences. This movie is the remake of a 2010 Tamil film of the same name. With both sets of audiences loving this movie, it came as no surprise since the saga of Singham is a huge success. The third instalment of the franchise will be releasing soon in Hindi in 2022.

Nayak (2001)

Nayak is a political-thriller that saw one man ‘Shivaji Rao’, Anil Kapoor portrayed the role, who took on this strong challenge to govern a state from the Chief Minister. It is the remake of the 1999 Tamil film titled, ‘Mudhalvan’ starring Arjun and Manisha Koirala in the lead. Both these movies received immense appreciation for the storyline and performances.

Tere Naam (2003)

Tere Naam has been a phenomenal success that brought Salman Khan out of his slump. It is the remake of the well-received and hit film 1999 Tamil film ‘Sethu’.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007)

One of the finest movies that had audiences hooked to their screen for its horror and comedy. This was a remake of the hit 1993 Malayalam film, ‘Manichitrathazhu’. The remake is a great success.

Hera Pheri (2000)

Hera Pheri is a wonderful movie with a great star cast and phenomenal comedy moments. This movie is a remake of the Malayalam film, ‘Ramji Rao Speaking’ made in 1999. The Hindi remake starring Paresh Rawal, Akshay Kumar and Sunil Shetty certainly gave a lot to audiences to laugh out.

Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (2001)

Fondly abbreviated as RHTDM is a classic romantic story and is highly popular among young college students. This movie is a remake of the Tamil film, ‘Minnale’. The soulful music and heartfelt chemistry between R. Madhavan and Dia Mirza made this move the talk of the town of the time.

Kick (2014)

Wanted (2009)

Kabir Singh (2019)

Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani are the lead roles in Kabir Singh, a Hindi remake of the Telugu hit, ‘Arjun Reddy’ (2017). Even though most people knew that the movie was a remake, it still stood out because of Shahid’s intense performance and some of the most listened-to tracks of 2019.

This list provides some of the upcoming Bollywood movies that are remakes of popular South films. The first half of 2021 has witnessed the announcement of numerous south remake films in Bollywood.  Out of this, we are bringing to you some of the most highly anticipated ones starring some of our most beloved actors.

Vikram Vedha

The Hindi remake of Tamil Blockbuster ‘Vikram Vedha’ will also see Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan as leads. The makers of this Bollywood release are also aiming for a September 2022 launch.

Soorari Pottru

This Tamil movie is also getting its Hindi remake which the makers announced on 12th July.

Hit

Sanya Malhotra and Rajkumar Rao are all set to star in the Hindi remake of the Telegu blockbuster, ‘Hit’. The original film will also helm the Hindi version.

U-Turn

As per reports, Ekta Kapoor will also produce the remake of the Kannada thriller ‘U-Turn’ starring Alaya F in the lead role. Debutant Arif Khan will also direct the film.

Anniyan

Bollywood star Ranveer Singh is also all set to appear in the Hindi remake of the Tamil blockbuster ‘Anniyan’. This 2005 Psychological action-thriller with Shankar as its director will also helm the original. The movie will also hit floors in mid-2022.

Comali

Arjun Kapoor will also star in the Hindi remake of the Tamil hit ‘Comali’. The film is also about a man who faces difficulties in adjusting to the current era after waking up from a coma.

Shehzada

Kartik Aaryan will also star in the Hindi remake of Allu Arjun’s Telegu blockbuster ‘Ala Vaikuthapurramuloo’. Rohit Dhawan will also direct the movie.

This shows that there are also multiple movies in the south that have original scripts and are better execution. So much so that Bollywood has to blatantly make remakes in hopes of good results. However, we expect our B-town celebs to outshine the performances of their subsequent adversaries and make these movies memorable.
